Our Dark New Normal

Details are still emerging from the latest shooting in D.C., a story that keeps getting sadder and weirder. What's known: Capitol police shot and killed Miriam Carey, 34, an unarmed mother and dental hygienist from Stamford, Conn. reportedly suffering from depression and other mental health issues. So much disturbs here - the likelihood Carey was a victim of her own panicked confusion, the swarming lethal army of cops who nonetheless confronted and shot her, the often-blithe curiosity of bystanders amidst the firepower and the spectacle of a "deeply meant" standing ovation by a mostly white male Congress for the killing of a distraught black woman by a police force intent on protecting them, but currently unpaid. (The question many of us had when we saw the footage of this tragic scene was, "Why didn't the police just shoot at the tires?(a danger in itself, but at least it would have probably kept the suspect alive). This shoot-to-kill mentality, largely fed by a violent culture (games, movies, music, etc), has infested the consciousness of many).
