Toni Morrison Calls Out The Racist Association of Blackness With Criminality

Following the media spectacle that was the OJ Simpson trial, Toni Morrison edited a collection of essays that examined the different ways in which the case was used culturally. Toni Morrison, in particular, keyed in on the ways in which the racist justice system, media, and American populace used the trial to bolster or re-inscribe certain racist assumptions about Blackness and Black maleness. One such association is the association of Blackness with criminality. Toni Morrison calls out this racist association. As always, her intellectual work has focused on the ways in which white supremacy functions to degrade the lives of Black people. The evil shadow of racism stalks this land, poisoning & shrinking the minds of many....
