White Wash

What is the genetic difference between people of different skin colors — black, white, Hispanic, Asian? Nothing. It turns out that we all share 99.99 percent of the same genetic code. So, no matter what the color of your skin is, race is more of a social concept, not a scientific one.

This documentary is  a thought-provoking narrative about African American participation in surfing culture, widely believed to be a "white thing". It also has a wider theme & makes a relevant contribution to American Civil Rights history. It delineates the social, political and cultural forces that restricted African Americans and other communities of color from fully participating in American aquatic activities, thereby limiting their access to surfing. What is so tragic about this documentary is that like so many other things in American culture, the further away from the roots of any given tradition, the more the tendency to rewrite the history of it by the dominant group. Surf/Swimming culture is a case in point.

Please watch this with your entire family.
