The Gospel of Thomas

Many  moons ago, I visited this little bookstore in Washington DC & stumbled on a thin  little book entitled, "The Gospel of Thomas". I was not aware at that time that there were books beyond Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

After years of meditative experiences since high school and my own research into the nature of mind & soul,  The Gospel of Thomas came to be quite a liberating experience for me when I read it. Jesus or Yeshua, like Buddha, becomes human, like me, stripped of any type of supernatural powers.  The attainment of enlightenment became possible for a ordinary chap like me!

I  recently came across an interpretation of each logion in the Gospel of Thomas (a logion is a saying attributed to Jesus Christ, especially one not recorded in the canonical Gospels) from http://illusiontoreality.com .  I fully concur with this writer's interpretations, although I would have added a few of my own insights here & there. I share his interpretations below in the hope that you will be as impressed & inspired as I was when I read them -

Logion 1

Those who seek should not stop seeking until they find. When they find, they will be disturbed. When they are disturbed, they will marvel and they will reign over all.

Logion 2

If those who you guide say: Look, the Kingdom is in the sky, then the birds are closer than you. If they say: Look, it is in the sea, then the fish already know it. The Kingdom is inside you, and it is outside you When you know yourself, then you will be known, and you will know we are one; but if you do not know yourself, you live in poverty and you are poverty.

Logion 3

An aged person will not hesitate to ask a seven-day-old infant about the Place of Life, and that person will live. Many of the first will make themselves last, and they will become One.

Logion 4

The disciples asked him, “Do you want us to fast? How should we pray? Should we give to charity? What diet should we observe?” Yeshua said, “When you go into any region and walk in the countryside, and people take you in, eat what they serve you. After all, what goes into your mouth will not defile you; rather, it’s what comes out of your mouth that will reveal you.”

Logion 5

Yeshua said, “A wise fisherman cast his net into the sea. When he drew it up it was full of little fish. Among them he discovered a large, fine fish. He threw all the little fish back into the sea, and he chose the large fish. Anyone here with two good ears should listen.”
